We have grown so accustomed to eating
processed food from fastfood chains and convenience stores—burgers, noodles, pizzas,
pasta, sodas, chips, and more—that it might sound nearly impossible to
completely get rid of them in our daily diet. Processed food are almost everywhere,
and it spells handiness and convenience at best. I know that at some point our
lives we might have tried buying the healthier lifestyle, but it is just so
difficult to steer away from being convenient!
Some might argue that processed food and junk
food have all been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), why
would one take the extra effort to convert into a healthier diet? Yes, it is hard
to commit to it and it might cost you a few extra bucks because raw, organic
food are a bit more expensive. However, we all know that the benefits of a
healthy diet really are worthwhile!
Why would you pick a can of heavily processed
goods, food whose good has been stripped off, over organic, nutrition-rich, and
farm-fresh produce? Imagine yourself enjoying a can of canned beans. It is flavorful
but it has little to no nutritional benefit.
High
in Trans Fats
Factory-processed food are packed with high
levels of trans fats. You might have come across this term on ingredients list,
but what does trans fat mean and how do they affect our body?
Trans
fats are fats that are originally in liquid form.
When factories process it for it for food, the original chemical structure of
the oil get disbanded and they transform it to a hardened fat. Trans fats are
branded as one of the most harmful fats, and ingestion of high levels of trans
fats can lead to health issues. It can easily cause your bad cholesterol levels
to spike up, and we all know that bad cholesterols can cause heart attack and
hypertension.
High
in Sugar
Did you know that just a single slick of a
blueberry cheesecake contains more than the amount of sugar you need for the
whole day? How much more if you take the cheesecake with a cup of hot cocoa for
your breakfast? Buying the habit of drinking or eating food that’s high in
sugar can significantly increase your risk of developing health issues.
